Magicians carry a vast amount of tricks up their sleeves which they utilize to entertain audiences in which they perform in front of. To be able to perform such entertaining tricks magicians worldwide use various methods to increase the level of suspense of their performance. Such methods include but are not limited to levitation, mentalism, distraction and hypnosis. At some point in every magician’s career they have performed card magic tricks of which the most popular is the old “pick a card any card” trick. When performed the magicians always seem to find the exact card that you have picked out of a deck.
When it comes to magicians performing magic card tricks, for the tricks to successfully work magicians have to know a series of principles which they can apply to using cards to perform magical tricks. Magic card tricks operate on over a hundred principles of which most are only known to the magicians. However through loop holes within the secrecy of magicians we have learned of one of the principles used in magic card tricks. The principle is known as Patter, patter is a form of practiced speech in which is used to generate a desired response from a group of people.
In the upcoming paragraphs we will look at the various types of magic card tricks performed by magicians. By doing so maybe will can understand how they are performed and what principles they are based on. Once learned we can then make an attempt to perform these magic card tricks flawlessly as magicians do. We might need years of practice before we can do what magicians do though.
Card marking
The ability to mark cards in such a way that is unnoticeable to random dealers is commonly used to cheat at casino games such as blackjack, poker and rum. The most common way to mark card is to slightly bend them. In the case of the old “pick a card any card” trick performed by magicians more advance card marking methods are used to guess the card that was withdrawn from the deck.
Throwing Cards
Have you ever watched a magician effortlessly through a deck of cards only to have them perfectly aligned where they land? This is the art of Card throwing; magician Alexander Hermann was the first to perform flying card tricks of the 19th century. It is unknown what principle this card trick operates on. The card spread is another form of card throwing in which magicians spread a deck of 52 cards on a table and turns flips them all over with a single card.
Once the deck of cards is turned over to spectator’s amazement all of the cards appear to be of one suit of cards.
There are many other types of card tricks magicians have at their disposal of which we will not be able to understand what principles they operate on unless magicians are willing to come forward.
